A landscape does not need to be grandiose to be effective. Frequently, the converse is true. In a small space garden the opportunities for excellence are seldom mitigated by budget, but rather by understanding the space at hand and working with it instead of against it. The great landscape architect, Dan Kiley, refereced ‘appropriateness’ and ‘poetry of space’ when talking about landscape design. When I am doing my best design work it is indeed appropriate and has a certain poetry and rhythm to it. Understand and appreciate the available space and work with it.
